Millennials need estate plans now

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2025 | Estate Planning

Many millennials assume that estate planning is a task that they won’t need to think about until later in life. But, in reality, it is just as important for younger adults as it is for older generations to plan ahead.

Life can be unpredictable, and having a plan in place protects both an individual’s loved ones and their personal assets if the unexpected occurs. Estate planning can also help to ensure that an individual’s medical and ethical preferences are respected in the event of injury or illness, and help to protect assets during their lifetime as well.

There is no time to waste

One reason estate planning matters for millennials is the accumulation of assets, even if they seem modest. Many in this generation now own homes, businesses and/or retirement accounts. Even personal items such as cars, digital accounts or family heirlooms can be addressed in a will or trust to better ensure that they are handled according to personal wishes rather than left for the courts to distribute.

Estate planning is not only about property. It is also about decision-making during times of incapacity. Millennials may not think about illness or injury, but accidents happen at every age. A power of attorney and healthcare directive allow trusted individuals to step in and make medical or financial decisions if a person is no longer able to do so on their own behalf. Without these documents, family members may face confusion, disputes or delays in sorting out necessary care or support.

For millennials with children, estate planning is arguably even more pressing. A will can name guardians to care for minor children if something happens to both parents. Without this designation, the court decides who will step in, which is an outcome that nobody desires.

Ultimately, estate planning is not only for the wealthy or elderly. It is about taking responsibility, protecting loved ones and better ensuring that wishes are respected no matter what life brings. By preparing now, millennials can create a safety net that reflects their goals and values effectively.
